Foodie news: roasts with the most

Foodie news: Roast Collection credit Armelle Habib

I am all for slow-cooked feasts and hearty roasts as winter rolls around, but sometimes I just can’t be bothered battling with baking pans and my dodgy old oven (which only works when fired up to maximum heat). Enter Melbourne Food & Wine Festival, who’ve graciously put together the Roast Collection, a month-long celebration of soul-warming delights.

For the month of June, more than 100 events will take place across Victoria, firing up the stoves in inner-city pubs, neighbourhood restaurants and regional wineries. Offers span everything from a daily roast plate at the Builders Arms Hotel and a Moroccan banquet at B’stilla,  to an indulgent weekend at Brown Brothers Vineyard in Milawa. Check out the full program to plan your own month of munching, or take a peek at my top picks below.

10 to try

The Winter Roast at Flower Drum, Tuesday 10 and 24 June, $125 for a four-course banquet, Melbourne (if this bad boy is anywhere near as good as their yum cha event for MFWF in March, then this Cantonese banquet is a must)
Epocha’s Family Roast, Sundays, $58 for four courses, Carlton (because sharing is caring)
3 Little Pigs Went to Portugal at Bar Lourinha, Thursday 26 June, $110 for a shared feast with Portuguese wines, Melbourne (in my book, Bar Lourinha can do no wrong)
Sunday Roasts with Estelle, Sundays, $50 for three courses and a glass of wine, Northcote (fabulous value from this stellar neighbourhood haunt)
Saint Crispin’s Pig Out, Wednesday 4 June, $120 for four courses with matching cider, Collingwood (cider and swine… say no more)
Buckle Up for Beef and Bone at The Commoner, Saturdays, from $32, Fitzroy (love this cosy lunch spot, plump for the $65 ‘Feed Me’ menu)
Roast Suckling Pig Lunch at La Luna, Sunday 8 June, $110 for food and drinks, Carlton (what can I say, Adrian Richardson has a way with baby beasts)
3D Milawa Duck Roast, $449 per couple including overnight accommodation, Brown Brothers Vineyard, Milawa (duck, durif and doonas: done)
Slow Roast Lamb Mechoui Feast at B’stilla, Sunday 8 and 15 June, $50 ($85 with matching Victorian wines), South Yarra (the spice – and price – is right)
The Nordic Roast Collection by duNORD, Wednesday 11 and 25 June, $100 for five dishes and three drinks, Melbourne (gluten-free and Scandi chic)
